I m looking into replacing my engine,in my car. Its mostly a weekender street monster. It weighs in at 1800 lbs with a 302. I was thinking of to choices. First up grade to a 351W with a stroker kit, alum heads rollercam and etc. Like 408 cubic inch. Or maybe go with a reworked 460 30 over, street cam, intake, decent carb and etc. I was told the 460 would have more torque and horsepower, built a little over stock and cost way less then trying to build a small block with the same power torque/horsepower as the 460 would have. Its a automatic car. How much more does the 460 engine weight then the windsor.
The longblock 460 I just bought was shipped with a weight tag showing it was rated at 600 pounds. Just out of curiosity, what car do you have that weighs 1800 pounds? My wife's escort with an all aluminum four-banger weighs more than that! Is this a tube chassis car without the engine in it?
Sory my computers been sick. Thanks "booneyrat75" for your curiousity. To answer your thoughts, its not a complete ford. Its a square tubed framed, ( don't laff ) 1968 V.W. Bug. engine up front,9 inch, ford disc brake rear, coilovers, 4 point rear suspension. fiberglass fenders and etc. And yes from 10 ft away it sits correct and looks like a stock 68 bug. If Hitler was to see it he would roll over in his grave. This car was not built to be a race car. Just a fun weekend street machine. To play with the local teen age mustang freeks. Any ideas on the bug feel free to write me back Have a great day !!!
The 351W will bolt up to your tranny - the 460 won't. As far as weight, a 351W weighs 575. I have a hard time believing that a 460 weighs only slightly more. The 460 is far more massive. I've pulled both and can personally attest to the large weight difference based on the arm on my cherry picker bowing with the 460 on it.
The weight tag referred to may only be a weight class, like 600 - 800 pounds or something. I know there are 2 weights circulating around for the 460 - 625 and 720. I think it was Dave Williams that put one on a scale and it was about 725 pounds, but don't quote me. I do know that somebody did it and verified the 700 plus weight as correct.
I would love to see the reaction of the local rice runners when that VW eats them alive. It would be priceless.
