Question Replacing the Steering Box

This may sound stupid, but I got a replacement manual steering box with a pitman arm for my 65 F100 that's been "on the shelf" for a while.

My question is - Do these things require any kind of lube? How to check/change it?

I do have a new rag joint I'm replacing at the same time. Doesn't look to be too bad of a job.

Remove the steering from the old pitman, (I have a pickle fork)
Unbolt the rag joint
Unbolt the three bolts from the outside of the frame into the box

and that should be it, from what I can see.

Thanks,
Keith

If the gearbox has been stored reasonably clean and dry, it should be ok, if it is used, it probably has oil in it, it uses 80/90 gear oil, if you want to change it, drain it before you install it as it does not have a drain plug.
I don't think you've overlooked anything.

The pickle fork will damage the rubber boots when you separate the drag link, an alternate method is to remove the cotterpin and castlenut, using a three pound hammer, strike the end of the pitman arm (hard) and the draglink will fall out.

Thanks for the tip on the draglink.

BTW - This also work for removing stuck brake drums. An old mechanic showed me this trick 25 years ago. Just whack the FACE of the drum with a BFH and they just pop right off.
