My check battery light comes on and my voltage gauge is lower than normal. When driving it will sometimes go off when on the highway but come back on. But the battery check at 12.8 volts when running and about 12.0 volts when engine is off. Does this sound like a bad alternator or faulty gauge?
Is the battery light set off by the voltmeter on the dash?
Are any of your dash lights dimming? Maybe the radio getting harder to hear cause the volume doesn't seem to work as well anymore. My battery light came on too. I know these days those lights are usually warning you your alternator's dyin. I know when the alternator went on my ole Chevy Cavalier, thank goodness I saw the Ford light!, that's what happened. Next thing I know I'm stuck in a bad part of town. But that's just my $.02 worth
When my alternator was on its way out it had weaked my battery. I turned everything on lights, signals, radio , heat etc... the truck then stalled out. A for sure sign. without testing the alternator. Mind you your mech. can test the load output in 2 mins. and be sure. cheers
The check battery light is really a check charging system light. You should be getting closer to 14.25 running. Probably got an alternator going down or extremely corroded connections.
I'd get the Alt checked asap. That's exactly what mine did, then it got progressively worse, until it died completely. For once, it happened right in my driveway!
I initially thought it was my serp belt or tensioner slipping because it would only do it at higher RPMs, but, as I said, it got worse.
