I am looking into this also, go to the pictorial section and click on 1971,there is a F-250 4x4 sport custom if you can find his gallerie he has done a really good job on the aft axle tank and shows some great detail and pics. good luck
I found those pics, it looks great, but as far as what he did it's a little more in depth than I was wanting to go. I was hoping there would be an easier way.
Well, You don't have to duplicate his install just maybe take a few ideas from it. I have seen an aft axle tank with the filler in the bed floor looked like it would be alot less work than putting the filler in the bed side and having it look good. 73 and up Fords have a hole in the side with just a gas cap sticking out no door for optional aux. tank. Have you thought about the saddle tanks? they hang in the space between the back of the cab and rear axle outside the frame and fill through the wheel well,J.C.Whitney and Aero Tanks still offer them. Do a search alot of guys have moved the tank under the bed,by looking at their install you can get ideas and save headaches. Good luck man.
I had the saddle tanks also, took them out right after I took the cab tank out, and gained about 4" of leg space by letting the seat go back farther. (removed bench seat, and installed buckets) I now have a fuel/tool box in front of bed. Holds lots of gas (55gal) and all of my tools and whatever. My warmed up 390 would suck that 18 gal empty, too soon!
ive got a tank thats meant to be a tool box / gas tank set up (tool box on top) im hopeing to replace my tank behind the seat but i want to have a guage in the tank to tell how much gas im working with ... how do i do this ....
I got a used marine fule tank from ebay that is a 15 gallon and stuck in kinda in my flat bed frame. works perfect and no more fuel sloshing behind my head. but i don't think this woould work so well for you guys running actual truck beds.
well ive run a second fuel tank just bolted to the front of my bed for years its relatively easy just need a drill two pieces of metal strap four bolts and i suggest two strips of rubber. place the rubber between the tank and the straps. then just bolt it in to the front of the bed simple.
another option though would try to find a rear fuel tank from a late 70's truck it sits between the frame rails behind the axle.
