I just bought an F450 with the 7.3 diesel. I bought the guage package which includes a pyrometer, but can't get any info on where the temp should be. Anyone who knows redline, I would appreciate the info.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 30-Dec-02 AT 03:27 PM (EST)]I could be wrong, but I believe the max. temp. with the themocouple mounted pre turbo is 1300*F, I wouldn't let it get above 1250*F. Also, I have read and been told that a temp around 600*F is the optimum for fuel economy. Cooler it isn't making all the power it can, and hotter it is making more power by using more fuel.
Hope this helps.
Also, allow the temp to cool to around 300*-400*F before shut down to protect the turbo.
It all depends on where the probe is located in the exhaust system.
If it is pre turbo, expect temps around 600-800.
If it is post turbo expect temps to be around 350-500.
The max temp pre turbo should go no higher than 1200, and if it is post turbo 900 is the max. If you exceed the EGT you could do major damage to the engine.
I have a '93 F-350 with a 7.3 Navistar with a Banks Turbo. Last summer after towing up a 5 mile grade, the engine developed a "rap". It sounds like a heavy tappet noise but I'm sure it's not the valve train. The pyro temp was over 1000 (I think the thermocouple is after the Turbo). The noise never really got any worse and the engine runs fine (same power & no smoke). Would you have any idea what might have broken? I cracked each injector line and the noise lessened when I got to the left front cylinder. The noise goes almost completely away during deceleration. Any ideas?
Thanks
