Mileage improvements.

Bought my first diesel 3 months ago. I have a 97 F250 4x4 crewcab. I want to increse my fuel mileage. Looking for ideas. Has 83,000 miles and I do some towing. Thanks for any help.

I'd be willing to bet that a K&N type of filter and a larger exhaust would give you a couple of mile per gallon. It helped me by 2+ mpg.

And if you have'nt done so already chang the fuel filter.

Just my .02!

I agree with Ghostrider304. Start by putting in a clean fuel filter, and then open up the intake and exhaust. My personal choice instead of a K&N is a TYMAR intake, but either is a vast improvement over stock. Replacing the downpipe would be my first step in opening the exhaust.

And a wish list that gets longer every day.

and once you get a better breathing machine, its time to consider a chip.
I have the SCMT that you see the webmaster hawking in the first post here in the diesel forum. I was sceptical that you could see such horsepower improvements, and still have an increase in fuel economy.

I have only had it for 3 tanks of diesel, but it appears I am getting about 3 mpg better than I was. Of course the major problem is that all that extra Horsepower has me putting my foot into it all the time.

Good luck.

As far as MPG increase , I have always heard :

1.Higher flow Airfilter setup
2.Larger downpipe and exhaust
3.Some type of tuning
4.Keeping the RPM's under 2000 when possibile
5.Keeping the speed under 65 mph

All above will help the MPG of any PSD truck

Agree with all. About the only thing Joe Boost missed was adding guages, especially if you are 1) adding a chip or SCMT and 2) towing.

I got the SCMT and guages are next. Then I attack the exhaust. Just with SCMT and keeping the tach below 2K, I went from 16.5 to 18.1 MPG. I have a K&N for now will replace that with Tymar or equivalent.

Actually, I found that my mileage increased by 1.5 mpg if I do 73 MPH, (vs65 MPH) after I put the SCMT in. That has been the most amazing discovery to me.

Ya , I forgot to mention the gauges.
I currently have a two-gauge pillar with a boost and volt gauge.
Why a volt gauge you may ask ?? I guess it is the racecar guy thing in me always wondering what the voltage is of the vechile I am in...Girlfriend bought me a E.G.T gauge and stearing coloum pod mount for xmas which i need to install soon...

2000 RPM is a boring 55mph in my truck. Guess I should invest in an overdrive!

Or larger tires With my 4.10's and 35" tires 2000 rpm is right around 62 or 63 mph

I have had 2 V10 and a Duramx and now have a power stroke. I have installed a KN filter and a performace devise to the oil pressure sensor which is for the injection system. Ford does have a hidden code will be put in the engine controller so you have to be carful what you put on it. If you truck is in warrenty and this code is it the ECM the warrenty is void . I used a Diesel Dynamic box which will add 50hp and is not seen by the ECM. I have gotten better fuel economy under load and empty. Empty I have gotten up to 23 mpg loaded will vary but 14 will get you in the ball park I pull a 29 FT travel trailer. My 250 is a 2002 built after Jan 1 4x4 crewcab. B You can have your cake and eat it. The Duramax is quicker out of the hole then the ford and quieter, thats the end of the story.
