2003 F350 Crew Cab 28400 Miles - Had my truck in the shop for a loud whistling noise at all RPM's in late Feburary. The dealer said the bearings in the turbo were bad and they had to replace the turbo. That was my first reflash. Had my truck in the shop again for the same whistling noise in late March. Exactly 1 month after the first problem. This time they replaces the EGR plate under the turbo. When I picked up the truck there was another whistling sound between 1200 rpm's and 2500 rpm's, and another reflash. They told me I needed a new downpipe off the turbo. I just picked up my truck for the third time after having the downpipe replaced and have a LOUD air leak behind the turbo. The dealer said the air leak sound is normal and is due to a new reflash that adjusts the flow at the EGR valve. Tomorrow I am taking my truck to another dealer to have one of their diesel mechanics test drive and listen to my truck. I love my truck, but my local dealer SUCKS.
this whistling.......does it sound like your normal turbo scream, only got louder over time?
i have heard this complaint before, and just trying to understand...since the bearings were supposedly shot in the turbo, i am wondering if this is why my turbo is soo much louder now than at say 10k miles.... ( i have like 19.5k as of lunch today...ill be at 20k by friday)
As for the whistling sound mattsf250, it's different than the turbo whine. The pitch of the whistle is the same at all RPM's. The pitch doesn't change. At this point, the dealer doesn't know if in fact the turbo was actually bad. It may have been the EGR plate all along. As for the downpipe, I believe the dealer screwed it up when they repaired the EGR plate. Either way, my turbo, EGR assy, and exhaust have been removed 3 times in the last month and a half.
My turbo whistles, usually while accelerating between 2000 to 2500 RPM. My wife says it whistles more than that. I don't hear it. Driving turbine helicopters and shooting without hearing protection does wonders for the ears. The truck runs great. No codes. I think my mileage isn't what it used to be. Mainly due to Oct flash. Predator fixed that. Runs like a scalded dog. My turbo still whistles. Is it the nature of the beast?
This whistle is not natural. The big problem now is a loud air leak sound, almost like a vacuum leak. The dealer says it's from the EGR valve and is normal due to a reflash.
They found a broken clamp and a misaligned downpipe. The leak is between the turbo and the downpipe and is blowing hot exhaust on the wiring harness. It requires immediate attention. The turbo must be removed AGAIN to align the downpipe. So in conclusion, the first dealer either didn't care if it was fixed right, or didn't know what they were doing.
Sorry to hear the bad news, Bruce... I'd take a copy of the Service Report to Dealer #1 and give it to the Service Manager. It won't help your truck any, but may help the next guy.. Someone screwed up & was telling a tale.. They need to get straightened out before they do it again..
