i was looking at the dipstick to my '86 F-150 with the 300/ C-6 combo.. and on the dipstick it says "warranty requires Dexron II"
I've been having a slight slipping problem at takeoffs.. for a brief second it will slip, but once you hit the acellerator, you'll feel it kick in.
this truck I recently got from my neighbor last summer, but I was always doing its maintenance. the last tranny flush I did to it was in 2000, and i used the oil they provided me with (Dexron3/Mercon)
once I got the truck and ran it for a while, i dumped a bottle of lucas and it cured it for a while. now its back. also for the past 3 weeks, only when it was cold, it would ocassionally slip out of gear until you revved it (obvious sign of low ATF) so i went ahead today and dumped 2 quarts of Dexron crap.
so what should I use? Type F (almost impossible to find now) or regular Dexron3/Mercon?
i'm about to do a tranny flush this weekend too since the ATF looks discolored.

Not sure about your C6; but my Haynes manual has Dexron/Mercon for it. And Type F for my 1979 C4. I don't think you hurt anything; the F-type is suppose to have friction additives. Use what your dipstick and owner's manual specifies. Check out all threads about tranny flushing in these forums.
I found plenty of Type F at Autozone and Advance Auto Parts .
I have a C5 in my truck and since owning it have always used DEXRON III with out any trouble. When flushing your tranniy, look inside the pan and see if there are any metal shavings. This is one sign that your tranny is going.
Good luck
Hmm, out of curiosity, whats the diff. Ive seen most brands like Mobile for instance plainly being advertised on the container as for use for both applications.
1987LTDmasta makes a good point; is the dipstick not Ford and from a C6? It may not be giving correct indication of ATF level and contribute to slip symptoms.
Ford started changing the transmission fluid requirement to Dexron II around '79-'80. My '81 F250 list's the Dexron II requirement both on the dipstick and in the owner's guide. It still called for Type F in the power steering pump. But I started using power steering fluid formulated for Ford and as far as I can tell, it satisfies all of Ford's power steering fluid requirements.
I have the C5 (AOD) and the dipstick says Dexron II as well. Hvent seen it in a while just Dexron III. Wonder what would happen if you put Type F into this Tranny which is an 86?Somthing to ponder.
Dexron 3 is a dexron 2, but with a couple more fricition additives.
Dexron II and Dexron I are still being made, but in small quanitiies and is extrememly hard to find.
and Redleg, C-5 is NOT an AOD... C-5s were a 3-speed tranny, ran off of vacuum (instead of a TV cable) , had no Overdrive, and were based off of the C-4 Transmission.
unless you did some wierd magic to combine the2, i dont see how they are the same..
Hi, 1987 LTD masta: used to seeing you on the CV site. I have an 86 F-250 351 with a C-6....the owners manual says use type H but, the dipstick, as yours, says Dextron II. The Owners man also says D II for AOD units. Last time I did the fluid change put in D-III,and adj int band ,works fine.
