Break-in period

I bought my 2003 F250 Superduty on June 24, 03 with a build date of approximately the same month.

I have asked several people including Ford's diesel mechanic about the approximate mileage the 6.0 is broken-in.

I get all different answers.

Does the mileage increase after break-in or this a myth.

I am a new memebr to FTE and and after reading many threads on the 6.0 forum, it sounds like there are many knowledgeable F250 6.0 owners out there who know more than I.

My truck currently has approx. 10,000 km. or 6,000 miles on it.

Tks

First off, let me state that I don't own a 6.0 PSD . . . . yet.

I have been beating up all the Denver area Ford dealers to see what different stories I get and they seem to consistently think that the truck seats and starts making GPM progress as you get closer to 20k miles.

Even though the manual says not to tow for first few hundred miles, I personaly would not do it. It takes more than a few hundred to seat all rings and the like in new engine.

I changed my factory fill oil at 3,000 miles on the nose (others do a little earlier and that is probably better). I felt that the first two oil changes are the most important so I chose to change at 3,000 miles and 6,000 miles.

The factory fill oil is 10W-30 and I personally feel that this is to light of an oil, especially for hard driving (towing) and summer monthes driving. There has been much debate on this topic lately, so you will have much to read.

Again, everyone has an opinion on oil, change intervals... but I like 3,000 miles on first two changes (and filter)... and you'll be fine. Just don't run it hard and let your speed vary some on highway so parts are not stressed.

Good luck,

Jeff

I had my first oil change at 4700 km or approx. 2900 miles and my second change was at 7500 km. or 4700 miles. The reason for the short interval between changes was I didn't drive it much during the winter up here and it was pushing 4 months between changes. I didn't want any hassle over Ford telling me that I took too long between changes so they could have an excuse about warranty work later.

This was my first brand new truck since the seventies and I kind of want to keep it looking sharp for a while so I drove my 91 F250 with a plow on it when it was really cold or real sloppy out. They use a lot of salt up here in the winter and don't want my new Superduty getting eaten.

Any idea about the break-in period.

Tks for responding earlier.
