I drive a 93 1/2 ton 4x4, when I purchaced the truck, it had an oversized flex fan and it ran very cold. I took that fan off and put the flex fan off of my 1970 with a 408 Windsor which was a little smaller, and now the truck(the 93) won't stay cool, always running hotter than it's suposed to. The fan off of the 70 was keeping that modded motor at the perfect temp, but bakes the stock engine in my 93. What I want to know is, can I swap the radiator out of a bigger truck(460 or older Camper Special 3/4 ton) to hold more fluid or is there somthing else I can do?????
Thanks
Eric
Yea it's got the stock shroud and I couldn't tell you what the stat is cuz it's the one that it had when I bought the truck in Feb. but I know it works cuz with the bigger fan that it previously had i could watch the temp fluctuate.
A larger rad might not solve your problem. If the new fan is smaller and leaves a healthy gap around the fan shroud then the fan may not be pulling air through the rad and is instead just moving air inside the engine compartment. I think it would be easier to:
1: Try the correct fan
or
2:install a pusher electric fan on the front.
A simple test is to throw a rag on the front of the radiator to see if enough air is being sucked through so it sicks.
If there's a big gap yes, but my 70 has no shroud and this fan kep it perfect, never too hot never too cold. But the fan on my truck i don't think is stock, cuz my truck has been apart, probably by the previous owners, it's got the plate between the block and the bell housing painted bright green, plus numerous other things. But as you were saying with the elec fan, what would happen if i were to get a dual puller fan from another vehicle and nix the mechanical fan altogether???? Good idea or a bad 1???
