why do i always hear that the 6.9's do better on gas, err, diesel? i am always hearing the older diesels getting better fuel mileage rather than newers doing better(clear up into the powerstrokes).
I am trying to make up my mind between a 2000 automatic or a 6 speed diesel. I am going to tow a 7000 pound trailer and i need to know if there is a big difference towing in the automatic with the overdrive off versus towing with the six speed.
thanks,
daniel willie
It is all preferrence. The standard trans is more of a direct connection from the engine to the differential. Many people like to know which gear they are in for performance or power. The automatics have some "slippage" due to the fluid connection from the engine to the transmission. No matter which you prefer, you will have to use common sense in the care of your choice. I am sure you will be hearing many different choices in here, but the final choice is YOURS. Hope this helps and good luck.
I think it all depends on... everything! My 6.9 only does about 13-14 mpg, but I've heard of 17-18 in 4 wheel drives. Just depends on the state of tune and your driving habits.
And another factor is where you are, flat lands or mountains.
What you are hauling or towing.
My best milage was a little over 21 on a slow sunday cruise.
My worst was 3.5 plowing snow. But since you back up as much as you go forward, that is very misleading.
I work mine hard every day and the average over the last 6 years is 10.7 MPG.
The reason the older motors got better fuel milage was because they were lots slower trucks. With the newer trucks, just mash the fuel pedal a little harder and go as fast as you want. I just upgraded my 6.9 to a 7.3 turbo, the milage I see is just about the same. But I am spending lots less time getting places with the extra power.
I personally know to many people that work their trucks that have had auto tranny problems, E4OD specifically. It was never cheap to fix one either. Working them it seems they only last about 130,000 miles before you put about 3,000 in a tranny swap.
