Well, I reckon this is about as embarasing a question to ask as any, but what the heck. Where do you find your trucks serial number? I just bought a 71 F250 (2wd) and need to buy some parts whose selection is based on the serial number range. For example "...for serial numbers M00,001 - on". I've looked on the door pillar - but don't see any numbers that resemble that. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!!!
Well, your serial number should be the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). It is found in three places that I know of...
1. The data plate on the drivers side door. For a 71, it should be 11 numbers starting with an F.
2. On the right side (passenger) of the frame about even with the starter the VIN should be engraved there on the frame. I had to use some gunk spray and a scrub brush to clean the frame enough to see mine.
3. On the right side (passenger) of the frame about where the passenger side door is at, same as #2. This one is hard to see unless your cab is off.
Hope this helps. If the number starts withan "M", it is a Mercury truck. They look just like our 67-72 Ford's but were built for Canada only from what I know.
You can probably use the number off your title/registration if there's no door tag. As for the 'M' designation identifying a Mercury truck, that only applies to earlier trucks. 68 was the last year for Merc trucks. The 67 and 68 Ford and Mercs all had the letter F starting their serial numbers.
