Power steering failure
I have a '79 Bronco Ranger etc with the 400 in it that I'm slowly converting and stripping to make a desert wanderer. It runs like a dream but the powersteering quit the other day and the replacement of the pump didn't fix it today.
After it quit I still had to drive it home and to shop to get part and during this time, every little bit on a hard turn, I would get a brief burst of power (1/10 of sec or less) then back to worse than armstrong steering, very hard to move at low speeds.
After replaceing pump I put in 1/2 quart of fluid which filled it so started bleeding procedure and was mostly unable to move the wheel without moving truck. Still full of fluid, level didnt drop any to refill p/s unit itself. Still no p/s.
Question is did I just get a bad pump or did my p/s unit fail all at once without stoping truck from steering at all? If I add an Idler pully to run the water pump can I still use the power steering box?...ddragon
id hit water and lose power steering, well after a while it went out altogether, and like you described, every now and then it felt like it was working for a few seconds, and it was impossible to 3 point turn on any normal city street.
well, after talking to a fellow '78 broncoer i ran into here in town, he told me to tighten the belt running the p/s.
i loosened 3 bolts, unscrewed the bolt on the end of the mount....kinda hard to explain, but if you see one youll know what im talking about. anyways, i moved the p/s box towards the drivers side far enough to put a slight amount of tension on the belt (not too much of course) and wala, power steering is back. now if i could just fix my rear lighting and leak in the diff.........
