Grinding Noise Before Shifting!!! HELP!
I have a 99 Navigator with the 5.4 32-valve engine. If I take off slow, I have no problems whatsoever! If it has to downshift to go up a hill or for passing someone, it makes a grinding noise before it shifts and then it does kind of seem like there might be some intermittent "slipping" or something once in gear. I even thought it might be engaging my 4x4, but have not been able to find out for sure yet. I was trying to see if the steering was tougher while it was making the noise, and it kind of seems like it might be, but that could just be in my head. I have 40k miles on it and have never replaced tranny fluid/filter. I have a little bit of mechanical knowledge, but not too much as far as transmissions and 4x4 goes. Some people have led me to believe that it's just my fluid, others say torque converter, and I just don't know! Thanks for any help!!!!
