I have a 97 F-150 with the 4.6 V8. I am getting a P0301 code. It does not have the COP. What generally causes this problem. Plug, Wire, Coil Pack or fuel filter, injector ??? I dont want to change everything if not necessary. I figured that usually their is one item prone to failure more than others... Thanks for any help..
Usually the plug is the problem and sometimes the wire. I do see a lot of people powerwashing off the engine and water gets down in the plug hole shorting them out.
I would start with the less priced items first. Your problem could be one of many, I had the same problem as you and replaced the plugs, (plat.) coil pack, (shop prices)
The plugs cleared the problem at first, then the skip came back. Replaced the coil pack ( $56.0 ea.) the same thing...good for awhile then back.
I'm still fighting this problem #3 miss-fire, everything I've tried worked but only for a short time. A couple of weeks or so...
Check the pvc hose for cracks/or leaks, may need to change the valve itself.
Another thing you may want to try if above fails...remove all plastic covers over your electrical connectors and spray with CRC contact cleaner. Remember to use the flamable spray it's stronger the the non-flamable.
I had the same problem and it was a fuel injector. You can buy a stethoscope from auto zone for a couple of bucks and hear each injector to see if there is a clicking noise that means that they are working. Oh yeah I tried to buy an injector from ford and they were in such high demand that they couldn't get one. I had to buy an aftermarket one
Well, goes to show "your never to old to learn"... I went to a local parts store ( name withheld ) the other day and asked the same question, and they told me if I had a throttle body I had no injectors... It makes one wonder about how they achieve grad. certificates on the wall!
Thank ya, OH, how would I check to see if the injectors are functioning? (Now that I know this could be my problem as well.)
Is it dumb to think if #3 is miss-firing, then this injector could be bad?
The engine runs to perfection when it's not acting up...
The truck has 68K on it. I went ahead and changed all plugs, wires and both coil packs. It took about an hour and a half. I have been driving it for four days now and no CK engine Light. I feel the problem is solved. I could clear the light before the rapairs and it would come back on before the day was out.... Thanks for all the help...

No it is not dumb. Long story short: my '98 F-150 5.4L had a P0303 code (cylinder #3 misfiring) had the mechanic check the plug and COP. Replaced the fuel injector, and problem went away. However, I now have a P0304 (cylinder #4 misfiring) and I'll see if the injector is the cause this time.
try pulling the plug and seeing if there is coolant on the plug, if so there might be a clamo loose above the cylinder causing it to short out, it hapened to me. check that and have fun
