I just bought a 95 F350 Powerstroke, and I am beginning to get worried that I was sold a lemon. First I barely get it home on a bad tranny. Then when it is scheduled to go in the shop it won't start. Tries to but nothing doing. So I tow it. I think maybe it is electrical, because the ignition switch feels loose to me. Ford place says no, it was water in the fuel and fixed that (groan). OK, so I get it back and limp it across town to a tran place that the guy I bought it from will pay to have have the tran overhauled. Get it back a week later...and drive it 50 miles before the tran slips again! While I was at the tran place the first time, he said my glow plugs are old or bad or something. Anyways...it is going back today to get another shot a tran (ggrrrr) and it won't start again!!!! Same as when I went to take it to the Ford place. But I put good diesel in it, so could it be the glow plugs? The Ford place never mentioned them and I had them do a complete diagnostic. It got down to like 35 last night, but it is 55 now. I am so bummed, and really stressing. Any ideas???
I had a similar problem with glow plugs, wait light comes on then turns off, try to start, but won't start. Removed fuel filter cover, located on the center of engine ,you will need 9/16th deep socket to remove the three nuts. Glow plug relay is on right side of engine, or as you are looking at it, left of the fuel filter canister. Caution manually engaging glow plugs too long may burn them out. I made a connection with a wrench across the two large terminals located on the glow plug relay for 10 sec. Then had my helper(wife)try to start it, it started up.It can be done by one person, put glow plugs tend to cool down before you try to start it. I repaced glow plug relay, problem solved.
*sigh* Well...my fiance (aka, "helper" ) lives out of town and is flying right now anyway, so that's out. Plus, this is a very tall truck and I am a short little girl that doesn't know a fuel filter canister from a battery cable (ok, not that bad). What I really think it is, is that the Ford place replaced the water seperator element and all that, but didn't actually take the water out of the tanks. Soooo...blah.
Thanks for the idea, I know the glow plugs might need replacing again at some point in the near future but the ole pocket book isn't up to it right now.
*blink blink* I think I know what you mean..the little switchy-thingy that is supposed to drain the water out of the fuel, right? If you can understand the very irritating girl-ese I just spoke in and I am correct, then I thought it had to be running for it to work? That is what I was told, anyways, even though I had never heard that before. Am I right?
The tow truck guy is coming soon. So I can do it when he gets here, just to do it. How long to hold it over? Five seconds or so? And would it have already ruined the water seperator element?
Also...could there be a leak in the head gasket? Just occured to me...
OK, update. I checked to see if there was white "stuff" in the oil. No. And radiator level was A-OK. Also, flipped the thingy for a few seconds, nada. Why did I have to buy a transmission-eating, "I-don't-feel-like-starting-today" truck ? Anymore ideas? It is going to the Ford place soon, I need ideas!
Right, so the wrecker shows up...and she starts right up for him.
Glow plugs maybe? Just that bad, that it had ot be over 60 for several hours before she could start? Dealership suggested bad ignition or starter sensor... I give up, I am overwhelmed by this whole thing. It's a conspiracy!!
Well I would have to say the Glow Plug Relay is BAD. Also The trans shop you are going to Evidently Dont have a clue what they are doing if It started to slip 50 miles later. I know it costs alot of Money But a BTS built trans is the only way to go. Local Trans shops dont have the Know how to make these things work Right IMHO.
I am thinking glow plugs as well. But as for the transmission, it came under warrenty but the guy wouldn't pay dealership prices. And he was kinda shady about it, so I wasn't going to argue. *sigh*
