F150 steering box

My dad has a 85 F150 2 wheel drive with 300 and the steering box blew out the pitman arm seal. I have an 85 F250 4x4 that did the same thing a few years ago. I tried to repair it but the snap ring groove has basically rotted away so a new seal was not a solution. I bought a new box from Ford, for several hundred dollars. Is there a cheaper solution for Dad's truck, rebuilt?, used? etc. Where is the best place to get a replacement steering box? Are they all the same 2x4, 4x4, 150,250,350, etc??? Thanks

I remember reading a forum a while back (year ago?) about this and remember someone saying that your better off buying a new one rather than rebuilding the old one. Mine leaks (slowly) and I was asking my front end dude what the best route is and he said the same thing. The old gear boxes were not quite beefy enough and he said new after market parts are built better, at least that what he said. He says they used that same gear box in f250's and f350's too, and they were problems cause they just weren't strong enough.

Just what I've heard, so I'm not sure if it's all accurate or not. Hope it helps you out!

Had to replace my steering box at 170,000 miles. got a rebuilt one for 179.00 plus tax and core exchange. Don't forget to rent the pitman arm puller. It's on there at about 300ft lbs of torqure. No problems. About a one sixpack job.
