when I time the engine by specs W/ a light (10 deg). she idles beautiful. when I time her by ear and check her with the light its still 10 deg and running awesome. But under load, knocking like you would not believe. When I retard her enough to eliminate the knock and check her with the light 0 deg. and missing at idle. vac advance? distributer? p.s. Ive used more than one light, just to make sure. thank you.
Tam,
Are you disconnecting the vacuum when set the initial advance?
If so, you've got too much advance in the distributor curve. This could be caused by a couple of things. There are springs that hold the centrifugal advance weights in during idle speeds. These could be worn, broken, and/or missing. Check them and see if anything is evident. Your vacuum canister could be causing too much advance. Replace it. That's not too hard. Or just replace the entire distributor.

sorry, the engine is a 300, w/ no emmisions. And you have to understand this has been going on for about 5 years, and in that time Ive went through all the heat ranges for plugs, and a whole series of unrelated repairs (matinence) has been done. Rebuilt carb, new points, coil , cap, switched from points to petronix. Ive also tried gapping the plugs both at points specs and elec. specs. When I pulled the plugs they were a beautiful tan. Thank you.
Is the source for the vacuum advance from the manifold or is it a timed source? Check the timing then plug in the vacuum line and see if you get more advance. If so I would try to find a timed vacuum port on your carb to plug the advance to.
Has the carb been changed or rebuilt? Maybe try rejetting the carb with larger/richer main jets.
