what type of pistons, cam and lifters should i use. and i do not know how to figure anything out in the forems. any help would be much apreceated.
thanks tim
i just put a new crank, main and rod bearings.and im not sure what type of heads. but i will have to find out, but i might use the stock heads.what type of cam and lifters and pistons should i use?
This is the highest compression piston for a 351M that I know of.
351M 1975-82
Forged
8.6:1
TRW L2466F
The cam should be selected based on the kind of use that you plan and the final compression ratio of your build. The Comp cams XE256 is good for low RPM torque, and lower compression motors. The Comp Cams XE 262 or 265DEH are good for midrange performance with a little more compression.
Stock heads are 78.4cc. Closed chamber 2V heads have to be Aussie heads. They may be as low as 58cc.
The TRW pistons in my last post will give 8.6:1 with 78.4cc heads. With Aussie (58cc) heads they will give you 10.7:1 CR. That is too high.
If you use the 351M 1975-82 Forged 8.0:1 TRW L2436F with 58cc heads your CR will be 9.7:1. You will be OK with 93 Octane with a XE 262 or 265DEH cam.
I would recommend doing a little work on the chambers as well as the ports. A few more cc's in the combustion chamber will give you some margin. You should have at least 60cc for the XE262 cam.
You should check the combustion chamber volume, or have someone check them before you start buying parts.
thank you very much. i will look into what kind of cleavland heads they are and i will let you know more about them. also do you know where i might perchas a desktop dyno?
ok that kinda sucks becouse i just bout a intake of my buddy he said it was the same.he had the intake on a stock 351m and got the heads later but never installed them. now hes got a 429 dune to the nuts in a mud racerso i gues i will stay with the stalk heads, pistons, but will put a cam and intake and a 600 cfm carb for now. i was origanly going to put a 460 in it but after a little home work i found out it was to much of a hassle. so i have a 460 sitting in my garrage as well.
Use the 8.6:1 pistons, the XE262 cam, get your stock heads milled to increase the CR, and ported to improve the head flow. Get roller rockers and a dual roller timing chain.
