i still cant seem to find pistons for this thing. all i am able to come up with in catalogs and websites, are the stock pistons. i went to my local autozone, and all they can get is stock... >:0 my machinist doesnt want to start work untill i have the pistons. anybody know where i can find some online?
you need to contact tmeyerinc. Google him or do a search here for tim meyer. he has the avalability of the Badgers. You could also try Prime auto warehouse in Irving Texas and ask for Brian. That's where I got mine.
i just ordered them through tmeyer inc. thanks for the help guys. ohhh by the way, the scorpion rollerrockers, are they better than the crane gold rollerrockers? i know they are cheaper, but cheaper sometimes means not as good, but not always. so what do you guys think? anyone have experience with both? how much of in increase in tourque/hp are we talking anyway? if its not much, i might stick with the stock rockerarms. to save a bunch. what do you guys think?
I can't give you a side by side comparison as I have never used the Cranes. I have heard that the scorpions are better. That's what I have and they also make them to fit on the stock rocker stand of the head without any additional parts or machining. I believe the part #for the ones that work on the stock heads is 1024. The other ones are the 1023's. They seem to work fine for me.
I have Crane Energizers, they are cheaper than the Gold. You need a Crane stud conversion kit to use them, but there is no machining involved and you can use your old pushrods.
I am not familiar with the Scorpions, except I know that they are pedastal mount, rather than stud mount. Just be sure that you can adjust them, because with a new cam it may be necessary.
is it wise to reuse the head bolts? or is that not good to do? i was checking sumitracing.com, and they have the arp head bolds listed as 58.99, is that for the whole set, or just one side? anyone have experience with this? the oem bolts, from ford ar 94 bucks. so thats why i dont know if the arp sets do one side or both.
Head bolts can be reused, but if they are original from 1977 it would be wise to replace them. The ARP bolts are good and a set should cover both heads.
i dont want to reuse them, but if im in a pinch thats good to know. i'm going to have to go to my local speed shop to order the head bolts i guess. ohh yeah, i have started to brekdown the motor, so i can save money on machining, anyway, i pulled all the pistons out, and afterward noiced there are numbers on the connecting rods, i didnt notice them untill after all the pistons were taken out, so im not sure of this, but i hope those are to aid in putting the engine back together, am i right? or am i screwed? i didnt mark any of them... btw, my machine shop is going to assemble the lower end, should they be able to figure this out?
yeah, that was in my plan, i was also going to have each piston numbered to its correct cylander. also, is the stock oil pump good enough? or will i need a high volume oilpump?
ok, thats good to know. do i need a new timing chain? im not sure if its original, because it does have an edelbrock cam in it right now, and it dosent look old, there is no gunk built up on it like on the crankshaft.
its only 50 bucks for a new one, so i'll splurge, and buy myself some insurance. i've norrowed my cam choice down to either the comp cams 270s or 282s, which one do you think is better?
