I own a 2002 psd f250 4x4.I want to know if any of the noises I am hearing are correct for a diesel. Most of these have not/were not there when the weather was good, now that it is cold do these engines tend to get a little louder?I have a vibration at idle, dealer says its normal, feels like something is out of balalnce, makes a whirring sound.PS pump is full and it has clean fluid.Any help?Next on my list is knocking,I THINK mine knocks more than others but I have heard louder, any solution?I have a pinging/detonation/spark knock sound at 1400-almost 2000 rpm on slight inclines with 1/4 to 1/2 throttle, the only time that noise is present.I am thinking of changing my oil to mobil delvac 1300,delo 400,or rotella(currently using quaker state 15w40) and may switch to a lighter viscosity(10w30 or 5w40) and I am changing stations(currently mobil) and will add some fuel additive(currently using something from walmart in a white bottle).Does anyone have any of these noises/problems(if they are problems) and if so have any answers or hepl for me.Sorry so long,my firdt diesel and want it to last,BTW 14k+ and had it since june.Recent oil change(made all these noises before oil change) and fuel/water emptied.Help?THanks Nick
Is it possibly the winter diesel fuel? My engine runs a lot noisier on the winter blend. I've recently started using Standyne lubricity formula with the winter diesel and my engine is running a lot quieter. Also, do you have your 4x4 engaged? My truck idles a lot differently witht the front hubs locked.
The whirring sound is probably your Exhaust Backpressure Valve (EBV). This helps the engine warm up quicker, and it causes a whirring/hissing noise. The winter fuel thing could also be the cause of the engine being louder as johnsdiesel said. Mine is a lot louder now that I'm running winter blend, however the Stanadyne additive does help quite a bit in my opinion. Also, the knocking noise you hear could be what's known as cackle or idle knock, but many people have varying opinions on that. If you look through some of the older posts you can find a great deal of information on that topic. Hope that helps.

I know what the ebv sounds like and the noise isnt that, since you can disconnect the ebv by pressing on the brake. The whirring noise isnt too loud just wasnt there before the winter. This is my first diesel and I am finally realizing all the different choices for oils,I will be using something else by the end of this week. The stanadyne is what I want to use but no one in my area carries it,I have to order online.I think I have a slight case of the cackle but not as severe as some others, maybe the stanadyne will help cause like I said these noises werent present before it got cold. Thanks for the help and any more suggestions keep them coming.Nick
