I have a '85 Ranger. I started having problems with the starter at first I thought it was the battery. When I tried to start it it would just clack loudly like a bad battery. Even when jumping.
I replaced the relay. Started the truck perfectly except that it would not stop trying to start. I pulled the neg cable off to stop the starter, checked that all wires were where they wee supposed to be and tried to reconnect the battery and fried the cable.
I don't know if the problem is the relay switch or the starter. It is a new relay switch but I may have hooked the wires up in reverse the first time , I don't think so but it is possible.
Any thought or suggestions Please
By relay switch, I'm assuming that you mean the solenoid switch on the inner fender?
I've replaced many of those and now expect them to stick. Try using an old screwdriver handle or hammer handle to bang on the switch. Don't smash it, just wake it up. That should un-stick the switch. If not, replace it.
Yes that is what I meant but when I called it a solenoid as I have for years the parts house guy corrected me which is why I didn't go back there for advice.
Is it common for a new solenoid to stick.
Thakn you very much Dealford. I thought it would be something simple and stupid. However now I need to buy a new Pos cable cause my first attempt burned the connector in half.
And for the record I did not cross wire the solenoid
