i have a 1994 f-150 with a 5.8L engine. the electric fuel pump stopped working. as it turns out, there is no power reaching the electrical connection at the pump. i have checked the maxi-fuse's and they are all ok. i also checked the inertia switch, although it had no reason to be tripped, just to eliminate one more possibility. it was fine too, although there seems to be no power reaching it. any ideas on this one? maybe a relay or fusible link? its been raining for a week straight and thats not helping a whole lot either.
The next thing to check is the fuel pump relay. Are you getting spark? When you turn the key on, the pump will only run for a
few seconds, without cranking the engine.
thanks for the welcome and lightning response! i have not checked any relays yet. there are four identical relays in a row. which one would it be? the fuel pump was getting pretty loud, so there was no doubt when it was running. you could hear it momentarily when you first turn the key on as you mentioned. this time it was dead silent.
If it was really loud then it could have been on it's way out. Do you regularly run it below 1/4 of a tank of gas? If so your pump could be shot. Trying unhooking the pump and testing it by hooking it directly to a power source. Good luck!
thank you all for your help. i do occasionally run below 1/4 tank. this is not good, huh? i will pick up a new relay and try it after work and let you know how it turns out. one more thing though. when i hooked up a code scanner, the light came on and stayed on, even before i turned it on. could this be indicating that the relay is shorted out, or something else more seriouse? again, thanks for all the input. this place is awesome!
ok, i checked all 4 relays and thier all good. maxi fuse's still fine. no juice reaching inertia switch. is there a test i can perform on the pcm module, or is that a non-issue?
