Thats it, the "bowl shaped thing" thats part of the air cleaner cover. After its gone it makes getting the air cleaner in and out a lot easier along with helping out the air flow.

More air, better fuel mixture, more power, must be equalled by air out so mod the exhaust to allow better flow out as well & you got the best your N/A can do without a turbo.
I studied all posts regarding removing the soupbowl because one mech tried to tell me that it was necessary & OEM was how it should be.
Later i learned that the "soupbowl was added by Ford not Navistar to quiet the intake noise for picky customers.
I gained a full 2 mpg & have a lot more noticable power on my '92
Read & learn
This forum is top notch!

i wonder if you can do anything like that for a turbo. l know it doesnt have a soupbowl, but i wonder if there is any way to allow the air to flow more freely. also what does n/a mean?

Tarzan,

Yes you can do something for turbo motors.
Do you have the stock Ford exhaust on your truck from the turbo down and back other tan no mufflers?

Get a turbo outlet from ATS that goes on a three inch downpipe, them replace the rest of your exhaust with a three inch system with as few bends as posible, and leave the muffler where it is now, in the trash.

The lower back pressure will increase your turbo output and response.

Also install a pyrometer so you know how hot you are getting the combustion chamber to prevent meltdown.

Naturally aspirated, breaths on its own with no help from a turbo or supercharger.

Hey One Cowboy, I took my soup bowl off as well. I found no need for the thing. Thanks loudwayne for finding out the reason that these things were on there in the first place. Enjoy your rigs.

With my turbo kit I was able to retain the original air cleaner. It's a CTS (Canadian version of an early Hypermax), I was using one of those aluminum tops that came off a power pack kit that I got somewhere. It has a modified soup bowl that is not as big as the original. It seems to work well. Probably best if it's just not there though.
