Hey all, just registered, this is my first post. I was hoping someone could help to clear a few things up for me. I have a 1980 F-150. I have an F for an engine code in my vin, and a K for a tranny code on the door post. I know the engine is a 351 2bbl, but would it be a 351M? Are there visually identifiable differences? It may not be the original motor. The tranny is a three speed auto, a C-series I believe. What is the difference between the C-4, C-5, and C-6 tranny, and how do I identify? Can someone provide more info???
I took another look at the engine. It has the flat rocker covers with six hold down bolts which is typical of the Windsor. However the distributor is canted slightly to the passenger side, typical of the Cleveland. The left front corner of the head is stamped with a "2"...
A 351 mod/clev would be a big block a wins would be a small block a c6 tranny goes with a big block a c4/c5 goes with a small block. For the tranny count the pan bolts and shape to id. thats a really good lokking truck like the green.
Thanks for the reply Bigreave, stupid question but how do I tell a big block from a small block just by looking? The truck has dual exhausts with ultraflo mufflers, it seems to have the rumble of a bigblock....but if it was an "M" wouldn't it be stamped on the head? I've heard of the "M" being a modified Cleveland, but isn't it actually a modified 400? Is Ford's 400 a big or small block? About the tranny...which shape and bolt configuration goes with which model???
A 351 mod is little differnt from a 400 hundred same block differnt guts, the best way to tell is a lot of your engine compartment taken up i mean does your engine sit close or far from the fanshroud. I had a 82 f25o with a 400 and c6 and, i dont remeber having a M on the head but the valvecover for a 335 ford 351/400 has eightbolts and on a cleveland there will be a 2 or 4 in the corner of the head.
Thanks again Bigreave for awesome info. I replaced the Vacume Modulator on my Tranny today and discovered the transmission is definitely a C-6...Leads me to believe the engine is likely a 351M...
Fornarog, probably because of the limited availability of the tranny. If you have to replace it it may be tough to find from a wrecker. Could be costly to replace.
