I had a fuel pump relay go out and my fuel pump kept running until I disconnected the battery. Does yours stop by itself?? If you have dual fuel tanks I think there may be a relay for each tank? If you have dual fuel tanks does it keep running on both tanks or just one??
It eventually stops. (2 hrs or more) I have dual tanks. I tried switching tanks and they [pmps] keep running like the energizer bunny! I have the battery disconnected now until I can find more info.

After shutting off my '89 F150, the fuel pumps keep whining along. The engine is a EFI 300 Straight six. It has dual tanks.
Last night someone suggested it may be a bad relay. Does anyone have any suggestions. I gotta try and fix this thing today.
Thanks

Yes it probably is a relay. On my 89 5.0 the relay is mounted on the left side of the engine compartment. I gave mine a good swat when it acted up and its worked fine ever since. That was ten years ago.

Don't know if you located that relay or not, but looks like whether you have single or dual tanks there's only one relay. If I remember mine was a Bosch relay 1" H x 1" W x 1" D, but for the life of me I can't remember where it is.
Your relay is located on the rear side of the air cleaner housing. There is a cover that you have to remove to access the relay's. The one you're after has a green top. My truck did the same thing. Replace with a genuine Fomoco. Let us know what you find.
This has happened to me and a few friends and it was always the relay. when you replace it(I paid $8) keep the old one for a spare. It will get you going if the other fails it just doesn't like to turn off.
Yeah this happened on my 90 F-350. A new relay solved it. The relays on mine are right behind the air filter box under a 1 inch by 8 inch black cover. A good way to check it is... when you hear the pump keep running after the truck is off jump out, pop the hood and flick the relay. If it quits after you tap it, there's your problem and can be fixed for like $10.
I'm new to the "computer forums" a friend suggested your website as a source for good fix-it info. I suppose I was a bit impatient.
Won't happen again.
Many thanks to all who replied. I replaced the "stickey" relay and put it in the glove box.. just in case.
I am very impressed with this forum. What a great way to learn how to fix your Ford!
