Attempted theft, damaged column

so some lowlife decides he is going to try to steal my Bronco last night from directly in front of Autozone. We walk out and he is hacking into the column. We convinced him it wasn't such a good idea and sent him on his way...

Unfortunately my ignition is trashed, my column is all screwed up, the shift indicator is broken,...

I am planning on customizing the interior and have found Ididit columns online. My concern is that they all seem to be catered towards classic GM's. Has anyone ever done one of these swaps? Would it simply be a matter of splicing the Ford wiring harness in? What about concerns about clearances? Any help would be greatly apprecated. I am pretty clueless on this unfortunately. I have cut and pasted the info below if it helps.

Thanks All,

Jack

Aluminum Tilt and Telescoping Column with Shift Arm
If you are the kind of person who insists on having nothing but the best, the IDIDIT Tilt and Tele with Column Shift will be on your list of priorities. In addition to self-canceling turn signals, 4-way flashers, horn wiring, and IDIDIT Aluminum Dress-Up Kit, this column has a 5-position tilt, 2-1/4" telescoping adjustment, and automatic transmission shifter built in. Collapsed lengths are 32.75", 36.75", or 39.75". BEWARE: This column occupies 14" of space in front of your dash !

This ultimate column uses a 1", 48-spline shaft and industry standard 3-7/8" GM wiring connector. An IDIDIT Billet Aluminum 9-bolt Wheel Adapter is included. Order your Aluminum Tilt & Tele with Shift in stylish clear anodized brushed or brilliantly polished finishes.

I think your best bet would be to get a replacement from the boneyard and put a new lock cylinder in it. Good time to go to a tilt if you don't already have it. Used columns don't even go for much. Ebay you can get them for not to much, maybe even with keys. Probably better than making something generic fit, and a whole lot cheaper than $1200! Plus your steering wheel will go right on and everything.

I hope you REALLY convinced him not to mess with your truck again.

Not to be mean but if someone already trashed your stock column, why would you want to increase the damage by $1200 next time . IMO you would be better off replacing with a stock column and spend some money on a good alarm. Good luck

you just sent him on his way? i would have hurt the guy very badly if someone tryed that and i caught them and i agree with nick and 84 diesel for 1200 why do that when you could go to a junk yard and pull one out of a bronco or truck and put tilt in like nick said if you dont already have it unfortunatley in some cases and good in others is where i live theres an abondent supply of ford trucks and broncos from 80 to 86 a shame that so many have to be in the junk yards but also great because i can always get parts that are used but still are in good shape for alot cheaper then getting them new

I was being sarcastic when I said we set him on his way,... in truth I assure you, he won't be able to pop a lock ever again, at least with his right hand.

As far as the effort/expense of the aftermarket column, I don't mind the expense, as we are completely overhauling the interior anyway, and would rather end up with with something that will fit in with the interior we have designed. I just need to find out what is entailed in this process. Any ideas on what we might be in for??? Any specific areas of concern? What about the wiring and clearance of the column. I hate to sound clueless but I have dug all over the internet and haven't found too much on the process.

We are already working on an alarm, although we have to have the new column installed first as it is immobile now. I wasn't planning to start the interior work for another month, as we have a performance shop working on a 600 ci 1175 hp engine that we are installing first, but in light of all this, I guess this moves up our timeframe.

Thanks all,

Jack
