auto shifter needle - 98F150

My brothers shifter pointer if off. By this I mean, the needle points at R (reverse) when in park and so forth. Is this a common problem? Is there an easy fix?

You can buy the selector indicator at the Ford dealer. Its a common problem. Sometimes its jus the white plastic adjuster bracket that breaks and you can just replace that part, but it comes with the assembly unfortunately.

So this would cause it to be off? It does move with the shifter, it just points one ahead of the indicated gear.

Its just a spring loaded needle on a rail with a wire that is pulled by the selector lever, attached under the steering columb. When the mounting bracket breaks it is still attached but no longer is secured to the columb and the whole assembly moves with it and causes misalignment. There is an adjuster wheel on it to fine adjust for wear, but rarely have I found it simply out of adjustment unless someone has disassembled the setup for some reaon. Another cause for misalignment is a broken shift tube assembly or completely worn out shift lever bushings. Also check for a loose cable mounting bracket.

Its very easy to look under the columb and see if the white adjuster bracket is broken. Ive only replaced a couple hundred of them for this reason
