I located the modulator valve and replaced it. The old one had a little push-rod looking thing about an inch and a half long. The new one didn't. I used the old one when I put the new one on. How much tranny fluid should have ran out before I put the new one in? The truck was moving when I first looked at it. It wouldn't shift into second and then started to slip. We only moved it about 1/2 mile like this. I guess it was low on fluid. It would only back up. I hoped a new modulator valve would help. It is still smoking, but had a ton left in the exhaust system. Now with the new mod valve on, it will still only back up. Any ideas? Mike 314-397-7278
Sorry, I don't know alot about these trucks and I'm not really THAT mechanical. I know enough to mess myself up! The truck is a '88 Ranger ext cab with the automatic/overdrive, and has the 2.9 6 cyl. It show 66k, so either 166 or 266k. I bought it thinking a modulator valve might cure it. It was smoking/burning tranny fluid. You could smell it from the exhaust and it smoked like a freight train. I took it around the block and it never wanted to shift into second. It could have been low on fluid then...I turned around and we put about 2 quarts in it. My buddy tried it, and it did the same thing. BOTH times, it would slip a little bit when it first took off. I doubt we drove it more than half a mile total. Who knows how bad it was to begin with though. My buddy has a car lot and they took it in trade. After a few minutes I went to see if it would do anything after it cooled down and it would only go in reverse. It would not pull itself at all. We towed it to my house, about a mile away (Ranger running, him pushing me...yeah, kinda hoosier), but it was dripping fluid the whole way...out of the exhaust. You can see the fluid dripping from all under the exhaust and out of it. I changed the modulator valve and it still will only go in reverse. When it was moving forward, it had one of the vac hoses unhooked (maybe the one to the modulator valve, but who knows, and the part on the left side of the motor that actually produces the suction was plugged off. We unplugged that part and hooked the other hose to it, thinking that is where it goes. The part that produces the suction also has another hose to it, and a larger hose that goes to the brake system. Not sure if this helps anyone or not.
