Hey...92 f150 225 000 km rebuilt 302
Recently noticed a shuddering on the highway and sluggish handling!!!
I determined that I was in 4wd..
When I reverse slowly, I hear a clunk and grind(4wd disengaging?) and when I go forward and pick up speed gradually, I hear a clicking in the front end and then finally a clunk(back in 4wd?)..When I try to engage and disengage 4wd using the stick..nothing happens!!
Whats up
Sounds like you've got the infamous auto hubs, which grow minds of their own. Just to be sure, watch the front driveshaft while somebody moves the vehicle about a foot in either direction to make sure that it is NOT spinning. If it's not, it's your hubs and you should replace them with with manuals. Mile Marker and Warn both make good hubs that everybody seems to like, starting around $50 at most places. Since you've got a '92, you can ignore the "conversion kit" which is recommended with the hubs (it's not applicable until about '94). Replacing the autos with autos is expensive and is throwing good money after bad.
Sure it's OK; you're just going to have the hubs engaging/disengaging while you drive, which will put a little more wear and stress on the front axle and drag mileage down some. You can probably accomplish the hub swap in under an hour if you've never taken the hubs apart before; should take you about 20 mins if you're familiar with them.
Thanks alot for the info..I just got two different prices on the hubs in canadian dollars
159 and 181...
sounds like alot but if it solves my problem it is necessary
One more question..
Even though the 4wd stick is not set to 4wd in the truck, will a faulty hub cause it to jump in and out of 4wd?
I just need to be sure
Thanks
