I just picked up an AIC unit from Ford. My question would be, what would you set the idle RPMs at and what is considered an amount of time that you would have to apply that too?

D. Dave-
I believe your AIC comes programmed with 4 different settings, the lowest is 1300 rpm's. You should be able to re-program your presets, similar to a car stereo. You should also be able to use the arrows to set the idle at any rpm you want. I think I have read that you want at least 1000 at extended idle to protect your engine. 1300 seemed a little too fast for extended idle to me. this is stuff that I have read on here, my AIC has never worked, lol.
I agree with joeltonjet, at least 1000 RPM's. I would set mine somewhere between 1000-1100 RPM's. Even though you have the auxillary idle controller, I would still change the oil more often if you are going to be idling for extended periods of time.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-15-03 AT 08:02 AM (EST)]Extended idle is more than 7-10 minutes. You want your AIC set so the EGT is at least 275*F pre-turbo to prevent wet stacking.
Are you talking about the black box that shows your idle speed... thought it was called and Advanced Power Controller ... just picked up a manual for the one in my truck - do you use it for anything other than setting high idle speed?

It can be used to run a PTO off your trans. and it has a setting to maintain a certain battery voltage.

Hey powerstroker, what's wet stacking? I've heard that term a couple of times but have no clue what it means.
Thanks in advance!

2002 F-250 Lariat, 7.3L PSD, 6 Spd Manual, 4x4 Off Road Package, Line-X Liner, grille gaurd, soft tonneau, altezza tail lights (adds at least 15HP ), more to come...
If it's anything like leak down it's when the rings cool off at idle and wants to let fuel sneak by into the oil. That's why the increased oil change intervals.
Wet stacking is when the combustion temps aren't high enough to burn all the fuel completely. When this happens the fuel gets by the piston rings and into the oil. The fuel also "resinates" and hardens on the exhaust valves causing valve, rocker arm and/or piston damage due to the valve not being able to close anymore. Keeping EGT above 275*F pre turbo no matter how much rpm it takes, eliminates this.

I checked my unit it is an APC - Auxillary Powertrain Control.
So does setting your RPM control to 1300 RPM achieve the 275F pre turbo temp?
I enabled the RPM control and charge protect. I'll have to see if the temp comes up...otherwise your shoving more fuel at it, otherwise I would think that would make the problem worse.
