I have an 85 B2 whose transmission (5sp) is making grinding noises in all gears except 4th. Shifting good but grinding and rattling. Can anyone tell me what my final days will be like and about how much time I have before it over. I have a Toyo Kogyo transmission. THANKS. b2man.
hey this is crazy but i had the exact same problem.
what i did was empty old gear oil from the gear box.
then i bought synthetic gear oil at 7 bucks a litre.
bought 3 of them. put them in gear box and its so quiet you
wouldnt even believe me.
this will cost you 25 bucks or so to try it.
try for your self.
its been a month or better with good results.
im satsified. ill drive her till she breaks then shes
going to scrap pile.
I think the reason that the TK in my 87 Ranger is still going strong at 221K is because I have used Amsoil synthetic 80/90 gear oil in it since it was new. It's no substitute for new bearings, but like the other guys say, a good synthetic might quiet the thing down a bit.
Well you can try changing the gear oil, but I had a simular problem and
it turned out to be the gears in the transfer case. If you don't use
your 4 wheel drive very often the bearings get clogged. Run the
4 wheel drive and see if that helps, even change the fluid if it real
old. The gears in the rear end don't go out, unless you ran it dry.
Check the imput shaft at the flywheel. My old 87 S15 made that noise. It turns out that the shaft was worn into the shaft making it a bit too small for being in the bearing. Not so much as a grinding, but kinda like the sound of a failing waterpump makes? Like metal rubbing on metal?
