I have a 2003 EB 4X4 manufactured in June 03. From 60 to 80 mph the steering wheel will shake if you put any pressure on it to the right or left. It will shake like the tires are out of balance but I am sure that they are perfect. If you do not put pressure on the steering it will not shake. Also when it does this it you turn the wheel about an inch to the right or left and then turn it back to center there seems to be some resistance, not smooth coming back to center. It did this with the original factory tires and now I have Cross Terrain’s and it is the same. Now for the strange part, I drive the same road every day and on the same road same lane there are times when it will not shake and drive perfect and the next day it will shake. It seems to do it less in AWD than in 2WD. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what it could be so that I can tell the dealer what to look at as they have no idea.
Perplexing. I have to agree, it doesn't sound like tire balancing because the vibration would be more constant than what you're describing. Have the dealership trouble shoot it. Try to get a service manager or advisor to go on a test drive with you.
Maybe somebody else has had a similar situation and can offer a fix.
Sounds like either the steering rack is going out or the antilock brake sensors are detecting out-of-round tires. You might also check to make sure your antilock brake detector rings are in good shape.
I'm on my third set of Big goodyear tires on a F250 I have. They are perfectly balanced (5 times by 3 different Discount tire centers) but still vibrate on the highway. Finally figured it out by jacking up the rear end and putting it in drive. The Discount manager called everybody over for a lesson complaint resolution. Each tire was out of round to varying degrees, but perfectly balanced. You can't compensate for out of roundness with weights.
Ok now for the past few days I have had it in AWD with no vibration, shake, etc, at all. I may take it to the dealer and request the "s" spring TSB 030604A. Although I do not have any sounds when putting it in the AWD that people have said. But I do have the vibration in 2WD that goes away in AWD. Any other suggestions than the above?
