GEM Module bad after blend door fix?
Well I just saved $1000 dollars by repairing my broken blend door myself but after putting everything back together, when I start my '99 Expedition the front washer fluid jets spray for about 5 seconds.
Also the front wipers and the 4x4 switch don't work either. Everything has power, and is plugged in to the proper connector, I'm just wondering if the GEM module when haywire? The check engine light is not on.
Unfortunately I had to drive the truck for a few days while waiting on the blend door with no dash and every connector plugged in that I could plug in. It was a pretty scary sight too see all of the wiring and speedo cluster being held up out of the way with zip ties. So I thinking I may have screwed the GEM module up by not having all of the grounds properly grounded during the tear-down and while driving the beast.
Does this sound like a GEM module issue? Is there any way to check them or reset them?
Any help is much appreciated!!!
It's Fixed!!! Thanks for your quick response. After the initial panicking was over I went back out in the garage again and checked all of the wires going to the fuse panel. When I started feeling around I found a pinched wire (as HomerWinzlow said). So I dropped the fuse panel and checked all of the connections and reseated the connectors again. Put it all back together and it once again works. The GEM module made the cut.
After waiting months to dig into the project I have to say I was a little ticked of when I found the broken blend door but on the other hand I was relieved that it was broken and I hadn't wasted 2 days of time tearing it down for nothing. You already know this but I ordered the new part from Ford and they sold me the whole plenum assembly ($231.00 bucks). After I got to looking and comparing the new with the old, I discovered they were the same housings so I removed the blend door assembly from the new unit and replaced it into the old unit. I checked it before I bolted everything back up and the blend door and actuator motor worked great. I wish Ford would just sell the Blend Door Assembly by itself and save guys like me a buck or two. Now I have the rest of the unit that is otherwise useless.
Hats off to Homer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Im very glad to hear it was a relatively easy fix and you are back on the road again.
You know when I started seeing these come in for the problem I had the same frustrating
question about the blend door not being avaliable separately as it is much easier to pull it out of
the case by pulling off that top plate over the cores. But according to Ford that plenum is
indeed different in some way that requires the entire plenum replaced or it will fail again.
I dont know if its simply the placement of the studs on the case is slightly off and causing
stress points or the alignment of the door to case or what. But as long as it works for you
thats great. I do replace the entire thing because that is what my customer pays for, and
because I dont want to worry about someone having a future failure because I short cutted them.
Im sure there are plenty of techs out there who would do that just to make more profit on the
job but I just wont do it for those reasons.
Great job on the fix!
