I have a Ranger 03FX4 4.0 litre with approx 12,000 miles on it. Today out of the blue it started to run rough. Hooked up computer and cylinder 3 is misfiring. Installed new plug and same thing. What is most likely the problem and will warranty cover it?? Thanks!
Yes, and please keep us updated. I'm interested in finding out what the problem is. I have an '03 FX4 with almost 13,000 miles and I've already had the engine shut off and CEL come on once. Let us know what you find out.
Well....just got back from the dealer. The fuel injector failed on the third cyl. I have never seen this. Hopefully a fluke and not a lemon in the making. What do you guys think??
Mark
Well I hate to admit it, but Ford's quality control has been lacking lately. When I took delivery of my truck, the step bars that are part of the FX4 package were missing, the fan shroud wasn't bolted to the radiator properly and one side was dangling there, the driver's side door seal was hanging partially unattached, and the rear bumper was twisted on one side. I haven't found a bolt or nut on this truck that's tight either. Hopefully you don't have a lemon on your hands, but I'd definitely keep a close eye on it and get as much as you can ironed out while you are under warranty.
I have just about 10,000 miles on my '03 FX4 and its starting to ping on some uphill roads, but it could be the whole gas issue were are dealing with. Who knows what some of these gas companies put in the fuel to make it last a little longer
Well the saga continues. Turns out the reason the fuel injector failed was contaminated fuel. I had called the station where I had filled up the day the problem started and left my name and number. The local supplier called me and admitted a problem. He said it is sludge and algae. The dealer is in the process of flushing everything and replacing fuel filter. Is this good enough?? Will there be or could be any long term damage?? I am furious over this. First 4x4 with only 12,000 miles and this crap. What action should I take? The oil company is going to pay for repairs....but is this good enough. I have been without a truck since Friday April 2nd. My main concern is future performance problems or damage. Please advise how you guys would handle this. I am all ears.
We had a similar problem once. The station here let water get into the diesel fuel tank underground. So when we filled up our PSD, it wouldn't even run.
We were extremely mad, but the gas station paid for all repairs and that settled it. Mistakes do happen. As long as the gas station agrees to pay for all repairs to your truck, I'd be happy with that if I were you.
I would just get them to give you a letter documenting what happened in case you do have a problem in the future that was caused by this, then you will have evidence. I don't think you'll have any more issues as long as its running fine when you get it back. If you had to rent a car i would have made them pay for that too.
Thanks for the suggestions. I just hope it is right. One more thing I don't want to worry about. I depend on my truck heavily. Documentation is a good idea. Thanks.
And you guys were so quick to pick on ford.Once they get everything flushed out you will be fine.I have had a 94 95 96 97 98 2000 and now I'm back to a 98 and I have never had any problems out of my trucks.
Thanks for posting that update. I'm kind of surprised that the gas station admitted it - I worked at a gas station/minimart place for a summer after high school and the manager told me never to admit there was water in the gas tanks. The station had been getting a lot of complaints from customers and she warned me never to acknowledge it, but to direct the complaint to her, and of course she never admitted it. So it's good to see honest gas station managers are out there. I'd be happy if they paid for the repairs and rental car fees if you had to rent a car.
ARCO and BP gas is really bad about being dirty and i have seen it plug up a lot of injectors.
WXBOY----I agree about Fords quality control. The alignment was off on my truck when i bought it, the wheels weren't torqued right so the rotors warped, The battery was dead when i went to test drive it, it sat on the lot so long the wipers were already worn out, the rear end only had about 1 quart of fluid in it and the manual trans was only half full. I complained a lot the first year of ownership to the dealer, and i fixed most of those problems and a bunch of rattles and various other things the dealer couldn't fix that i did, and it's turned out to be a great truck as long as i stay away from the dealer.
