i recently had the carrier bearing on my drive shaft redone. when i put the driveshaft back in, it drove fine, but ive noticed a small leak where the driveshaft goes into the tranny. any thoughts or suggestions? i heard about a "shaft sleeve" and something about greese, but so specifics.
thanx
I'd plan on replacing the rear tranny seal. But while you have the driveline out, inspect the yoke on the driveshaft for wear. There are sleeves for many applications but I'm not sure if the make one for this case; I've never looked. When installing the driveshaft, I like to lube the seal prior to installing the driveshaft so the seal doesn't run dry.
Sounds like the seal has failed. It's pretty easy to change. I always lube the seal like CB9Mile, but I pack the inner lip with grease instead of using oil. It acts as a heat sink to keep from burning the lip on startup and while "seating in". The little bit of grease needed will not harm anything in the transmission. Check the shaft to see if a groove is worn in it from the old seal. If it is bad, you may need to sleeve it. Sometimes you can polish out small imperfections with fine sandpaper. Another trick is to seat the new seal in a different spot, so it's not riding on the groove. That doesn't always work, but should in this case.
