Tire Size

Hi folks,
I need to buy a couple of front tires for my 66 F100, and need the correct radial tire size. I'm going to run stock width (6-1/2") x 15" rims. Right now I've got wider wheels and tires that I'm taking off, so I don't have an accurate comparison. I think the owners manual calls for a 7.00 x 15 bias ply. How does that relate to radial sizing? I'm just not up on tire tech anymore. I won't be hauling any huge loads on a regular basis if that has any bearing on tire size.

Thanks,

Dave

daveg66;
I'm running 225/75B/15 on the front tires of my 66 LWB & 235/75R/15 radial mudders on the rear, both seem to drive & ride fine; for right now until my old bia tires wear out; then I'll but radial's on the front as well; On my 65 SWB I have 235/70/15's all around; I was told the largest tire for factory rim would be around a 235/60/15 series; this I plan on running once my restoration is complete on the 65; your local tire shops should be able to give you info as well..........
Hope this helps;

CC

I have 215/75R15 on my stock rims (but they seem to be wider than 6-1/2" -- how does one properly measure them?)

These calculate out to being a little lower I think than bone stock, and of course, radials squat down more anyhow.

I personally like the look, though I am possibly going to need to swap the rear for a higher rear. I don't tow much of anything and I want to be able to drive distances without reving too high to get to 70 and burning too much gas.

Do you have the correct rims for your 66? Didn't the 66 have the caps that attach to the outward pointing nubs (so called "outies"), as opposed to the earlier "innie" rims? The outie rims were used for a long time, so they are easier to come by.

If you were thinking of buying hub caps off eBay, keep this in mind. I am not certain personally, as I have a 65. But their is a lot of voodoo about caps out their, and a lot of opinions about what is correct. Your CC may have had very different hub caps than a stock truck as well.

Good luck.

Thanks guys, that gets me in the ballpark. I have the "outie" wheels, with some dog dish hub caps that I've gathered over the years. I know the wheels are not 66 vintage, not sure about the hub caps.

6 1/2 inch rims is about 165 mm so even a 215 tire is too wide????

According to my tire/wheel info you can mount up to a 255/70R15 on a 6.5" rim

JC: The number to be concered with is the Width figure or the second one in the sequence. A 75 or wider 70 should fit with no problem on the 6 1/2's, how tall you want to go (ie the 215 or taller 255 ) is personal preference...
