I park way in the back away from other cars, too. I figure it's just extra excercise. But, of course, there are always cars parked around me when I get back to the truck. Go figure. Bad thing is, there is nothing you can *legally* do about dings in your vehicle, parking lots are private property. But then, I guess there is nothing anyone else can do if there are 14 toothpicks jammed in their locks and a bumper to bumper scratch in their paint, either....
Some people just have no respect.

Gee, I'd hate to park next to some of you guys right after the a-hole that dinged you got back in his car and drove away. It's one thing if you catch someone in the act, but it's vandalism if you don't. You're no better than the guy who nicked you if you retaliate. In fact, you're worse because you're causing the damage intentionally. Grow up.

I was wondering about that same instance myself. If I were to catch them in the act, then I would just have to kick a piece of that (_|_)

Mudlord-
You know, it's just that some people take alot of pride in their vehicle and will park FAR away from other cars, just to keep dings and such from happening. So it really sucks to go to the trouble just to have it happen anyway.

And it's vandalism either way. The guy that just put a nice ding in your door is vandalizing, just the same as the guy retaliating. I doubt that most people do retaliate, but I bet everyone of us that has come back to our $40k truck just to see that some inconsiderate A**hole has damaged it thinks about all the wonderfully evil things we could do to retaliate.

Just on a side note the touch up paint is truely a pain in the rear to put on the truck. If there is any type of nick you have to reapply about 10 million times to make it look good as new, then wax the area of touch up another 15 times.

You know, the one thing that upsets me the most of car mufacturers is the glossy, ultra-delicate paint job they put on sheet metal that is prone to rust.

#1. Fancy paint is going fade, dry out, and crack. It will also be hit by rocks, door dings, an errant 2x4, and if you're a real F-150 ower, branches and brush in the woods where you go off-roading, not to mention, shovels and tools you use to work on things in the bed.

#2. Body panels are made from a material that is unsuited for outdoor use. It rusts.

Trucks are purely practical vehicles, you use them to go to work, or use them as work trucks. They haul. They tow. They're awesome. But they're not delicate sports cars.

In a heartbeat I would buy a truck that was made like a DeLorean. With plain stainless steel body panels over a internal skeleton. That way, you can beat the hell out of the truck cosmetically and it wouldn't show or matter.

Don't get me wrong I know there are folks out there that like to customize a street truck and such, and that's cool. Paint is for guys like that. But if you want to haul tons of rocks and dirt and lumber, why should you have to stress about scratches and dings?

My $0.02 rant.

I am usually the "lucky" one that gets to watch the 500lb broadzilla park her beige four door '72 LTD 3" away from me and struggle to get out of her car. How many GD times does she need to slam that mutually heavy door into the side of my vehicle before she realizes she just to FKN fat to make it out of her car? Yes I park far enough away that I should catch a bus to the front door. Yeah, this time the wooley mammoth thinks that one lifetime experience walking will tune up that mess of a body!

these people who find your truck and park to close are the same ones who park there car in front of the garage door at my work. There can be 20 places to park but in front of the shop door seems better.

....where do these sheeple get there license from?

My brother parked his brand new 1981 Camaro (I know its not a Ford LOL) out in the Boonies once. Only to come out and find a pickup parked next to it real close. And then to find out he was the proud owner of a rather large door ding from said truck. Well, the guy just happened to have a two foot pipe in the bed of his truck, that led to him not having any taillights, headlights and a broken windshield. I told him he had no reason to take the pipe home with him as a souvernier. But it made him feel better so I told him to go ahead and keep it then. It proudly hangs on his wall in his garage.

They do that at my work, too. The guys that get there at 4 a.m. and hop in a crew truck to go to the jobsite and get back to the office at 8p.m. always park right in front of the main door, so the rest of us (as well as our customers) can park way back in the back of the yard, behind the shop, OR try to squeeze in to the 1/2 sized spot that shares the buildings a/c unit...makes you wonder WTF they are thinking. To make matters worse, when they get there and park in the front of the building, they have to WALK TO THE BACK to get to the crew truck...and vica versa in the evenings. AARRGGGHHH!!

Sorry for the rant, but this is one of those issues that get my blood boiling! (Then there's always that welfare thing, but I digress...)

Hey, as I mentioned, I have started keeping track of lisense plates of the offenders and after three strikes I retaliate. I tried leaving polite and not so polite notes and still the same damn people did it again and again, they never learn. I even caught some little chinese guy parking my driver's side door in one morning (plenty of room on the other side just to lazy to pull out and come in straight) and I went back and yelled at him, scared the hell out of him, next week, he is next to my truck and there is a new dent... I don't vandalize on a whim, I just got fed up after I found a dent the size of my head behind my driver's side door one night, and short of sitting in the bed of my truck with a shotgun and threatening people all day (although that would be more fun than work) I need to do something.

I noticed at the condo complex parking lot today some bozo 6" away from my 2004 a6 audi. He was over the white line by 15" and 4' away from the car to the other side...sure enough there was a nickle size ding right in line with his drivers side door.... I took my f250 sd and blocked him in so he would have to find me to leave...Sure enough he came a running with his entire family...He was the grandfather at a family dinner so all the adult kiddies where in tow....After telling hime he is going to pay he said " calm down life is to short, it is only a dent"....Now this car is detailed by me every two weeks and has not a swirl mark on it..He thought my insurance would pay for it and I said no way he was...Took pictures and noticed most of his family was driving some expensive cars....I said to get all his familys cars to drive by me and I'll just tap their passanger side door with my hammer and I would concider us even......I am 300 lbs and when I am mad I look like a boiled owl!!! He gave me his licence to get his address and phone number....Now who will give my odds on him paying the bill??....We are talking chump change for this(100-125 dent wizard) because I already two weeks ago paid to have the same type ding removed.....In my younger years I would have done a quick step on his hood while he and his entire family watched.....I must be slowing down!:O(

I like the visual on that one... I feel your pain, man. I really do. There oughta be something that can be done about this kinda thing. (that doesn't involve shotguns, blood, or stepping over the legal line...). I think it is safe to assume that people that do what they can to avoid putting their own vehicle in a 'ding-zone' also are concientious about not damaging other peoples cars, as well. It's common courtesy. NOT a hard concept to grasp!!!

Just so there is no misunderstanding - I have exactly those same feelings when I see a door ding in my vehicle. I have found damage up to and including a mangled rear fender from someone cutting their wheel too soon when they backed out. Other than cussing up a storm and being really pi$$ed off for a while, there isn't a lot you can do about it.

I've even had people open their doors into the side of me while I was sitting in my car TWICE over the years. Both times I confronted the individual and both times they absolutely denied doing any damage. Talk about a mind-blower! Those are the cases where retaliation might make sense. Not that I'm admitting anything.

And I understand those cases where you have repeat offenders. You can be pretty sure who the guilty party is. But just about any other time you decide to retaliate you might well be messing with somebody who didn't do anything to you. As much as you really want to strike back, don't do it.

Anyone interested in my new product? When you press the lock button on your keyless entry remote a 3ft. spike will pop out of the sides of the front and rear bumper to keep people from parking close to you. The device will be equipped with a proximity sensor to keep from stabbing yourself in the leg if you press the button too soon.
