They come empty for shipping, I usually dump a couple quarts of fluid into it before slipping it on. You can add fluid until the point that you stand it upright in the installed position it just about wants to run out. Any more than that and you make a huge mess trying to install it.
Fill it with tranny fluid, same as you use in the tranny. I like B&M Trick shift...but any brand will suffice. Fill the convertor thru the center hole while its laying flat.
Type-F is for older Fords....Determine the proper fluid for your tranny. I dont know if you have a 1970 or a 1995 vehicle. There is a different recomended fluid. I forget the cut-off year for type-F as I own all older stuff and it all is recomended with Type-F. Im a 1979 and older type of guy :]
my tranny builder recommends type-f in later model stuff that he has built as a type of "trick shift".
i think that is what cid473 was getting at.
but he uses clutches that are compatible with the ford fluid. so consult your tranny builder first to be safe...
Yea, my tranny god wants me to run synthetic B&M trick-Shift in my C-6 behind my 870 HP 460 at over 8000 RPM. Knock on wood......2 years and running with no issues dragging the sled.
I think the cut off year for Type F is 1980. I was told by a friend that owns a transmission shop that there is not really a big difference between the dexron mercon and the type F, and you can use either one if you have to. Sometimes I mix them because my motor is a 84 so I use the Dexron Mercon III for the PS pump, but my tranny is the original 77 that uses Type F, but I will use whatever I have open.
type-f used in newer c6 trans will not hurt trans. the dexron-mercon has a friction modifier that makes for less harsh shifts, but promotes slippage. type-f has a harsher shift, but less slippage. most performance trans builders recomend type-f if trickshift isnt available, even in chevy trans. b&m even recomends it in their instructions in their shift kits
