Do you find that your fuel tank holds more than the book says? The other day I drove up to the pump, proceeded to fuel up and took my time getting all the foam out and put in 30.3 gallons in a 29.0 gallon tank. It was full to the top of the neck but according to the gauge, I was still the needle thickness away from empty and I dang sure didn't coast up to the pump. I trust the pumps where I buy my Diesel (or at least thought I did) but it makes me wonder now. Anything like this happened to you?
I generally fill up about the time the low fuel light comes on, and I commonly put about 29-30 gallons in my 29 gallon tank. I suspect (and have heard on this board) the tank probably holds close to 33-34 gallons. I also usually go well over 100 miles before the needle moves off of full.
You can put about 2-3 gallons extra in the filler neck. Just be care ful as we all kow it is pressurized diesel that combusts. Summer is on its way hte to hear about your truck blowing up.
So if the "might" hold more than what the book says, how do you calculate your mileage while running doen the road, if you are not sure how much they hold to start with?
Guy's, I ran my truck out of fuel last Christmas (just bought the truck - bad fuel gauge) and with the fuel I brought out to the truck and the fillup afterwards it took almost exactly 29 gallons. That is the amount stated in the "book" for my truck. Now I fuel up at 300 miles on my trip meter instead of watching my fuel gauge, a whole lot safer. Paul

Very easy. Fill up take mileage, fill it all the way to a couple inches in the neck. Next time you fill up to same spot how much did it take? How many miles did you go?
(start mileage-end mileage)/gallons for second fill up to same spot = mpg
My truck has dual tanks, and according to the owner's manual, they hold 19.0 gallons and 18.7 gallons. I've run each one dry at one time, just to see how much they truly hold. The 19.0 gallon tank takes 22.0, and the 18.7 tank takes 21.0. Instead of a total capacity of 37.7 gallons, I can put 43.0 in mine. Knowing that, plus getting good mileage, is how I made it from Seattle to Reno without having to refuel. Total distance: 825 miles. Gallons at fillup in Reno: 42.7. You bet I was nervous.
