I was wondering . I want to swap out my open rear in 2002 f150 , have 9.75" carrier . Is there a difference in spline count on the open or posi carriers? All the carriers are the same size etc. What do I need to look for when buying one . Trying to find a used one if theres one out there ! Any help or info greatly appreciated ! Thanks, Mattyb327
Sometimes buying a whole used rear axle is not much more than buying just the Trac lock differential. This does depend on where you go. But if the price is right, it may be an easier route. If you choose to still do just the carrier swap, regardless of open or limited slip, the spline count should be the same for both. This provided that they are coming out of the same axle. They still use 8.8's along with the 9.75 in F-150's. Sometimes you have to remind people at salvage yards of this. Just because they work the counter, does not always mean they know what they are talking about.
The 9.75 carrier doesn't require any mods to install a locker or LS (other than what the locker manufacturer may require). The axle spline count stays the same with or without LS. It has only been around since '97 so it will be difficult to round up a used one. Finding a locker or aftermarket LS is difficult due to its limited years of production and lack of a selection of aftermarket parts. Keep surfing the web, one will popup.
