Well my 91 ED04 finally started slipping (real bad). I had heard the stories. Anyway to adjust one of these? Or do I have to rebuild/replace. I read the post about the swap to a manual and I'm not doing all that! Does anybody build an auto that can handle the diesel?
Did it lock into second gear? It should be throwing all sorts of codes if it's really slipping. Find a good tranny shop and have them scan it for you.
Everyone claims they can build a bulletproof E4OD, but I haven't seen too many of them out there. There is a guy near me that runs a tranny shop that specializes in Allisons and he's built a couple ODs for us that haven't come back. His shop is called 'Powershifts' I think, he's in Woodinville, WA. Not sure where you are.
There are a few places that claim to make bulletproof e40d's. I haven't personally had any experience with them. What I can tell you from experience is that the converter clutch is a weak point. So is the factory ford programming that allows slipping/mushy shifts and t/c clutch engagement at too low of speed and too often engages and dis-engages the clutch causing wear.
Look for companies that sell upgraded clutch in the t/c and kevlar bands and clutches. Reprogramming the pcm is easy for most good chip places, but a lot of people have problems with some of the companies.
A good factory rebuild with and upgraded t/c will usually last 100K if not abused too hard.
What is it doing?
I thought I blew my trans, my vehicle would only creep forward or reverse no matter how much you pushed on the accelerator pedal(didn't want to call it a "gas" pedal). Dropped the trans, and it turned out to be only the torque converter that was completely shot. Got another one(make sure it's for a diesel), and re-installed trans, back in business for less than $250!
I had it loaded down and I stopped for a light. When I took off again and it changed into 2nd gear the engine reved up like it was in park or neutral ---not going forward. I made it home slowly and now it does the same unloaded. If I pull it down to drive 1 it will take off pretty good but I soon as I shift up to 2nd it boggs down. Once you ease (very slowly) up to hi-way speeds, it goes down the road as fast as you want to. And reverse works fine.
replaced mine with a jasper reman, have had good luck with it so far.but i dont tow alot with it,just a daily driver and snow pusher.my factory E4OD made it 137,000 before she let lose.
You've lost the 2nd gear band, servo, or valve body problem in actuating it. ( I think. ) The c-6 has a band for 2nd and the e40d is modeled after the c-6, so it goes that the e40d should have a 2nd gear band. If you keep driving it this way, you will smoke what is left. Fix it right away or you will burn up what's left of everything good.
I would pull the pan and look inside to see what I find, if you can. If you find a lot of stuff that looks like crunchy, oily drum brake lining, then the band came apart. If not, then I would check the 2nd gear apply solenoid/hydraulics and the servo. You can check the servo with compressed air and a good tranny manual. You can bench test the solenoid ( at least I think it has an electric solenoid for 2nd gear application) with an electronic volt-meter.
Try asking some of the guru's around here or over at tccoa.com. Somebody should know something of what to do better than me.
