hey all it is an 88 ranger ext cab 2.9fiv6 auto trans w/4x4(electronic)
my bro in law bought it for cheap not too long ago running good but needed a front transmission seal...went throught the hassle of dropping the tranny, changing the seal and putting the tranny back in.
now it wont start for him, there is gas in it ,i am told the fuel pump runs when you first turn the key like normal...but you turn the key and the lights light up but it wont crank the motor.if you jump the solenoid it cranks but wont fire up.
i told him seems like the neutral safety switch but he said he doesnt know where it is,but all the wires are hooked up and that he double checked all the wires.
my 1st question is where on the auto 4x4 transmission is the neutral safety switch located?
and if it is disconnected or damaged will it keep the truck from starting?
Try pulling the connector off the neutral safety switch and putting a jumper across the plastic plug. That will bypass the switch and let you know if that is the problem. Just be careful because the engine will start in gear, so don't leave the jumper in there if the truck starts. Replace the switch. Let us know if that is the problem. If not, we'll try something else. Good luck.
Since it's a no crank AND no spark, tell him to check for 12 volts at the batt terminal of the ignition coil. Should be there with key at run or start.
Making progress, thats good. BTW a quick simple way to test the starter relay is to remove the Red/light blue wire (the one that is a slip fit) from the relay and connect a jumper wire from that terinal on the relay to positive on battery. If it doesnt crank the relay is the problem, not the neutral switch.
