I am looking into buying a new F-250 and my biggest concern is what engine to buy. I wont be pulling much, maybe a john boat or four wheeler, but I will also do a lot of driving, esp. interstate so I am concerned about gas mileage. Any comment appreciated. Thanks
I have the v-10 with the 5 speed and 3.73 rears and i love it, i get about 13.5 around town and 9.5-9.75 towing my 26 ft. 5000lb camper at 65-70 mph on the highway. I really cant tell you any highway fig. empty but i think its the way to go, a lot cheaper than buying a diesel
which to get. My main concern with the diesel is that I only drive 5 miles to work, this can't be that good for a diesel can it? As far as towing ill be towing a 9000lb car trailer average 1000 miles at a time. what to do what to do is the big question.

Around town I get around 13 MPG, towing our 4000 lb trailer, 9.5 MPG, and empty on the highway, cruising at 65 MPH I get almost 15 MPG with 3.73 gears. You do have to be light footed from a stop to get good mileage. Jack rabbit starts and speeds over 70 MPH on the highway really kill economy. The truck is a 4x4, crewcab, longbed. The diesel is better by 3 or 4 MPG and costs two tons more. If you tow alot it is worth the cash.

I am going to buy a Ford f250 sc 4wd. I am agonizing over the engine. The 5.4 is not big enough for my needs. My choice is between the V10 and The psd. After all the math is in the psd will cost $3,700 more than the V10. I know several people that have the 99 F250 and F350 psd with autos and I beleive the 3.73 rear. They all are getting 13 to 16 mpg. People with 97 psd in 5 speeds were getting 17(I borrowed my brother's) Diesel fuel here is now around 12 cents higher than gass. My worry is that the V10 may get mileage similar to the 460 9-10.
I love my V-10. Diesels are noise..you hear them 3 blocks away. The V-10 gets 12 mpg, Ihear the diesel gets 18. The Diesel costs an extra $4,000. Say 12,000 miles per year. The V-10 uses 1,000 gallons, the diesel uses 667 gallons.
You save 333 gallons at $1.30/Gallon. That is only $433 dollars a year or over 9 years to pay the difference...
GET THE V_10 !!!

If that is all you will do with it then get a F150 ecoboost. Heck, they can tow like 11,000 pounds with the right gearing.
