I had the best day today i found a 69 dodge daytona and bought it for $100 off an old lady who said it belonged to her son who had just died and wanted it out of her yard. i towed it home put some gas in it hocked up a new batery and jerry riged the ignition to start with a screw driver and the original 440 engine fired to life. Its rusted out pritty good so much that the seat sits on the driveshaft but other than the floor its fairly solid. And get this it still has the original wing and paint on it. Does anyone know what this car is really worth. I cant decide whether to restor it or just take the motor and sell the rest any ideas?
You could take the wing off of it, get a front clip offf a charger, paint it orange, put a rebel flag and dixie horn on it and have a general lee. sorry, i could not resist. Actualy i think it would be cool to restore it into mint condition and paint it the original color
Holy crap, if you're serious then I HATE you! If you've got the $ to restore it right then you can pull quite a bit. Just expect to put A LOT of $ in it to do it right. Whatever you do DO NOT take the engine and sell the car! If you can't restore it then by all means PLEASE sell it to someone who can. Like noted earlier, there are very few around. Chrysler made approx. 1500 in 69 and 70. The Daytonas and Superbirds were made solely to kick *** in NASCAR. Funny that a Ford guy bought it considering that's who Chrysler wanted to beat.
In all seriousness, I'm looking to go to school soon for automotive and would love a shot at restoring it. It obviously sounds like it needs an assload of work but I've always loved Daytonas. I don't know where you are but I'd be more than willing to come take it off your hands.
I WOULD NOT restore it. Advertise it in Hemmings and walk away with the money. To CORRECTLY restore it you're looking at enormous expenditures in time and money to find the correct NOS parts and to do the work. The people that pay the big bucks for these cars expect them to be perfect - they discount heavily for anything they might have to rework themselves to make it perfect. An amature job that brings it up to a level two car won't cut it.
I had a 55 Caddie convertible that I picked up out of a barn 6 years ago. Straight out of the barn it was worth about 15K, I started adding up everything it needed to make it perfect and the work I couldn't do it came up to over 13K when I stopped counting and thats not giving my labor any value. On a good day that car was worth about 38K, on a bad day 25K. Rather then risk losing money for working my butt off I sold it after washing the dust off it and getting it to start - never even unloaded it off the trailer. The guy who bought it ended up spending well over 22K on its restoration and he still wasn't to happy with the finished product.
id restore it, but im waiting for you to say april fools. If it is NOT an april fools and really did come across a great deal like this ...... well then i hate you as well. Good find, but the day is almost gone so might as well come clean.
No joke hear ill post a pic. as soon as i can get my hands on a digital camara.
After hearing what you guys had to say i think ill take a stab a restoring it if the cost isnt too great.
It is good to hear that there are still some "finds" out there. Unless you are equipped and have the deep pockets to do a restore in the right way, I would put a good high price on it and take the money.
