I have a stock 2001 f150 5.4. This truck is just too damn quiet. I'd like it to make some exhaust noise and sound like a truck - something i can here while driving. however, i don't want it very loud. I am looking for something simple - like simply changing the muffler to something like a flow master. I'd like to do this myself.
you guys have any recomendations? again, i am just looking for some exhaust sound i can here while driving, but not overly loud.
Rodney...I have a MagnaFlow muffler with 3" pipe from the y back. I had to keep mine family friendly, because my daughter watches her dvd's in there. I makes a nice rumble not to loud. When I get on it, it livens up, but just cruisin can't hear too much. And the plus side was it was installed for only $247..pipe and all.
That sounds like what I am looking for, but for simplicity sake, would it be possible to get similar results just from installing a different muffler and letting everything else the same?
I'm no expert, but I would say it would sound similar. The reason I changed all the pipe is I didn't want to have to change it later if I get headers. I don't like to pay for things twice, if you know what I mean.
i know what you mean. I don't want to spend the $$ for a full system, so thought maybe I could get a bit louder sound (than stock) by just changing the muffler and doing it myself. Maybe i'll give it a go.
yeah, good luck, I don't think you can go wrong with either the MagnaFlow or the Flowmaster. Both are proven mufflers and there are a lot of others out there too. Gibson makes a really nice stainless steel cat-back, but it's pretty pricey.
dhhf64, You should get a very similar sound with just the muffler swap. When you run larger diameter tubing, it does change the note a bit though. I think you would be happier if you went with a complete catback kit, and not just the muff swap. If it were me, I would save up until you can afford it. Also, the kits normally come with a nice chrome tip, which can also effect the exhaust note in a positive way.
The longer and bigger the tip, the louder and deeper the rumble. It basically is a crude megaphone. The shorter and smaller the tip, it sounds closer to stock.
Bassani makes some great stuff! I have a SI/DO the side in front of the rear passenger side tire. Its just the right sound "not too loud not to quiet".
so, how difficult is it to just replace the muffler? I am a noob, but I have a hacksaw! Does the new muffler need to be welded on, or will it come with clamps to be clamped on?
thanks for your help guys.
You could weld it in, or clamp it. I prefer clamping to welding any day. It allows for the exhaust to move if need be, without coming loose. Most mufflers dont come with clamps I believe, but they are only a few dollars at any napa or autozone.
if I had your 5.4, I would slip a simple 50 series flowmaster in the stocker's place. if im not mistaken the 50 series is around 17" long and the stock should be around that length. I would reccommed the 40 series but i dont know how loud you wanna be. i've heard some nice things about the 40 series on a 5.4 but its your choice...the 40 series is also 3 inches shorter so you would need to add some pipe
I agree with Gobstopper909...Just change the muffler. The 50 series flowmaster sounds like your best bet. You did say you don't want it to loud stay clear of the 40 series..
you guys helped me make my descion, i am going to go with the 50 series. now, which one? the delta flow, or the suv/performance?
i like the idea of simplicity - and if the 50 fits in with no pipe changes, then i think i can do it myself (i hope). btw, how difficult is it to cut pipe with a hacksaw?
