94 tach cluster

Hey guys, 94 4.9l tried to install tach cluster from a 95. Didnt work(oil and volt didnt work) swapped back and now Im not charging. Any ideas? Is it possible to change the harness connector wire positions to accomodate a later cluster? Just a thought.

I installed a later model cluster in my 93 to gain the tach.
At first I didn't realize the difference in clusters. The newer ones have lights for the air bag warning system. The low battery warning was moved. You must move the wires in the harness plugs to match the vintage of the cluster. Go to ford and compare the wiring diagrams for yours and whatever you are working to install. I ruined a battery and an alternator before I realized that the low battery warning circuit is the source of the current that enables the alternator to charge.

Good luck. It is possible.

Well it seems a 95 cluster will work in a 94. Turns out my problem was an unseated alternator light socket. Evidently the cluster sends 12 volts to the alternator through this light and a 510 ohm resistor to get the alternator to charge. No bulb, no charge. Drove me nuts but I got it working. Thanks for the info.

I hope it works out for you. I had the same type of problem. I installed a cluster from what I was told was from a 95 Bronco into my 95 F-150. Turns out, this cluster was actually a 93 with a 95 speedo assy. Someone switched out the speedo and passed the whole cluster as a 95. I didn't realize it until three days later when I lost all power along side of the road. Thought the alt. died, but in actuality the battery finally gave out. I replaced the alt., but I still had no charge. I traced the problem to the new cluster, and found that there was no battery light circuit, and thus you know the rest of the story.
