no dash board lights

i have a 1990 bronco II. i took out the radio to find about 7 or 8 wires not connect to anything and they are not radio wires because the radio and all the speakers are workin fine.here is the problem, first off, about a week ago. i installed a new head unit (which is working fine) but i when i started my truck,my parking lights and brake lights came on without me turing them on. so i taped all seven or eight off those (not in use) wires thinking that might have caused the problem.after i did that the problem stopped. well driving to work today i noticed that i have no dash lights. if some one can help me with this problem,it would be great.or even help me find out what those wires are that are not connected to anything

Radios

well my guess about the lights in the dash is that i have an 86. i am 18 now and have gone through 3 stereos and many lighting changes in the dash. The wires could lead to your pannel, there are these plastic chips, very thin things that have wires flat on them, that make your dash light up, they are very easy to pull off the back of your instrument pannel and you might have shorted out the circuit also. so if you feel like taking out the dash to check for that problem, be my guest. sorry about the lights. if you take the pannel off, also take time to replace any lights in the dash that are burned out.

dimmer wire

there is probably a dimmer wire on your new head unit(it should be labled) it is probably grounding out. all you have to do to fix it is cover the end and replace the fuse for the dash illumination and it should work
