Well I replaced my stock Ford pump with a used Ford pump (paid $12). The pump I put in squealed as well, just not as loud. It took me 4 hours to get the damn thing in there since I had to work around my A/C. After all that fiddling around to find out my pump still sucked I went into a fit of rage and tore out the A/C. My plan was to do away with the compressor so I have room to install a Saginaw pump. I'm still trying to work out bracketry.
Question is this. My neighbor said that the old heavy duty Ford trucks (C600) came with a 460 and that if I can buy the pump and brackets from one of these it will bolt right up and will turn giant tires better than a Saginaw. Does anyone know anything about these C600 power steering pumps for turning a 40-44" tire? I thought a lot of guys were using the Saginaw but would like to get opinions before I go on a wild goose chase for one of these pumps.
Ivan, I use the ol' "canned ham" (saginaw) in mine and it works great, even with big tires. The x-over makes life easier on it off course. I know many guys who changed over to the saginaw and it made a big difference. I know some of the older big Fords did have a heftier pump but don't know what it was. Let us know what you find out.
with big tires , the saginaw is just about the best way to go , ford pumps are only good to about 33" tires before they start having problems , im not sur why , but thats been my experience, bob
Ever consider trying out AGR Power steering. They have what is called the ROCKRAM that has a hydraulic cylinder to help turn those big meats. They claim up to 44".
I've looked into a ram assist and may do that in the future. Right now I'm only running 33's but plan to go to 42's in a month or so. I have to replace the pump right away because my old one crapped out on me. Just figured while I had it apart I may as well get something more heavy duty in there so I don't have to screw with it later. I think I'm going to go with the Saginaw. The heavy duty Ford pumps use the same bracketry apparently and I have had clearance issues all along (reason I got rid of the A/C) that I'd like to solve.
Btw, just looked at AGR and saw the prices on hydro assist. Then when I regained consciousness I decided it best to avoid looking at that site before I go into another epileptic seizure. Would be nice but that's an insane amount of money.
But I like the twitchiness Pro . . . it's the only thing in life that makes me feel normal.
Want to get this together by the weekend so I can go play. I hate having my truck parked! Every time my neighbor comes by I hear "Ya know, if you'd bought a Dodge you wouldn't be under there right now" to which i just reply "If I bought a Dodge I'd be lighting in on fire right now."

Just remember its a labor of love...
and beer is your friend.
Yea Dodge that Tree or Ram what? The only manufacturer with a verb for a name. Which brings to mind of pics of me pulling one out. Those pices are a bit insane, just like the gas prices. But I have too much fun driving my rig. People seem to just move out of the way.
