oil mod?

does anyone smarter than me think it's possible to drill the 7/16" hole in vitro? like, with the block still in the truck? my old 352 still runs great, good compression, it seems to pile oil up in the top end. or could i just put the holley jets under the rocker stands to restrict the top oiling and forget about the 7/16 hole for now?
thanks

If it were me, I'd put in new rocker shafts.

Not safely possible. You should be fine with the stock oiling system for now. Its just an easy way to make the engine last longer during a rebuild. If it is running good right now I would run it till she pukes.

Do you have a high volume pump? If you don't then the pooling of oil is caused by excessive clearance between the shafts and rockers OR your shafts are upside down. I would check this first. If the stands are correctly installed then jetting it would probably be the best option.

you know, i never though about the rocker shafts, even though i learned the same lesson years ago with my last fe.how would a guy check clearances? i remember the last time, they were obviously pretty well shot. replaced em with an adjustable set, back then i think it was about $80 a side.
thanks again

You can use a caliper (that goes to thousandths) to check the inside of the rockers, and a 0-1" mike to check the shafts. Clearance should be .003" - .005", with a wear limit of .006". Usually, if you can see the wear on the shafts, and feel it with your finger they're shot.

If your old 352 is all original, it's possible that your oil drain holes are plugged with peices of valve stem seals. It happened on my 390. The first time I tore it apart I noticed a lot of debris, and not a lot of valve stem. I pulled the heads (without removing those bolts from the oil drainholes), cleaned everything up, replaced the valve stem seals and put it back together. They do drain a lot better now.

That is another good point I didn't think about. There was a whole bunch of that stuff in my heads when I tore my 360 apart. There was hardly any oil making it up to the heads by that point anyway. I have no idea how that engine stayed running.
